Roots back to western theatre where they share a god or festival. The traditions that continue to influence theatre today in europe, canada etc. Traced back to the 5th century bce, this was a time where theatre was celebration. Drama consisted of three distinct forms: comedy, tragedy, satyr. The festival of dionysus (greek god) / bacchus in athens every spring. Greeks thought drinking wine felt like there was a god inside of you. Performance in theatre frees you of being yourself, just like wine did for the greeks. Masks used in theatre similar to wine putting you in an altered stage of unconsciousness. Theatre makes us question the boundary between reality and fake. Theatre was presented annually in outdoor venues called amphitheatres. Amphitheatres were designed where the audience was arranged in a semi circle in front of the stage and the play was staged in a forward facing manner.
