Document Summary

Survey: consists of a set of questions used to determine a person"s attitudes, beliefs or behaviors. Advantages: quick to get groups of participants, cheap. In order to generalize from a sample to the population the sample must be representative. Random sampling: each person has an equal chance of ending up in the sample. You can generalize the findings, saying this is what i am observing now and will likely behave like this tomorrow . Inter- observer (inter- rater) reliability- consistency in observations between experimenters. Experimental method (experiment): in an experiment you manipulate the variable and see how much change there is. Advantages: you have control over many factors; you can infer a cause and effect relationship. Example: alcohol experiment where memory is influenced by alcohol. Iv (cause): amount of alcohol- experimenter picks different dosages. Dv (effect): memory is what we are measuring. No they could just have bad memory. What is missing is a control group!
