Document Summary

Memory: learning that persists over time through encoding, storage and retrieval of information. The information is acquired then stored then retrieved. Learning is the first step in the memory process. Super recognizers: display an extraordinary ability to recognize faces. Information processing model: input --> processes --> output. 3 measures of retention (evidence that learning persists): recall: retrieving information that is not currently in your conscious awareness but that was learned at an earlier time. Example- fill in the blank questions are a good recall test: recognition: identifying items previously learned. Example- multiple choice test: relearning: learning something more quickly when you learn it a second or later time. You will always relearn material more easily that you learned it initially. Overlearning/ additional rehearsal: overlearning/ additionally rehearsing verbal information increases retention, especially when practise is distributed over time. Tip of the tongue phenomenon: you know you know something but can"t think of it/ remember it.
