Concerned with stories -- real or imagined. Fine arts: arts that you have to be trained in to be highly skilled. Art, music, dance, and theatre (quartet of fine arts) The art form; theater is the building generally. Temporal (only happens once, exact show can never be repeated) Where dances, theatrical performances, rituals occur (a theater) A place for viewing not listening (music) Peter brook wrote a book called the empty space . His definition of theatre: you need a performer, a spectator and a space. Theatre also needs to be live (tv show, movies, etc. don"t count) Theatre has a multitude of purposes, and those largely occur as a result of its connection to ritual. Theatre = actor + spectator + shared space. Proscenium (know what it looks like too) ( picture frame ) Comes from greek proskenion / roman proscaenium. Skene comes from greek word for hut or tent used for storage.
