Document Summary

What determines what information gets stored in working (short term) memory: for the most part, it"s what you attend to, attention: if a stimulus is not attended to, it will disappear from your sensory register almost immediately. According to vygotsky, attention directed by the environment is lower mental processing. But with the interaction of people and learning to regulate your attention, it is higher order. Attention is exogenous and turns into something endogenous: trade-offs of types of attention, exogenous attention is adaptive for young children. Exogenous attention allows babies to soak up information about every interesting thing they see, whether or not is it obviously useful or important. This helps babies construct new schemes and change their old ones much more quickly than adults do. Externally directed attention helps children be broad learners when they have the luxury to do so: endogenous attention is adaptive for adults.
