Document Summary

Change in allele frequencies of a population over a generation. Individuals best able to survive and reproduce is not a random sample. Individuals with traits that result in high fitness contribute greater proportion of their traits (genes) to the next generation. Fitness: relative or biological, the ability to survive and reproduce offspring relative to other individuals in the population. Selection pressure: something that reduces fitness of individuals, biotic or abiotic, predator is a biotic selection pressure to its prey, something like temperature is an abiotic pressure. If the environment changes, traits that were once adapted can change. Idea was that evolution was a thing that takes a long time: can happen from one generation to the next. Common misconceptions: evolutionary change occurs in organisms, occurs in population from 1 generation to the next, adaptations occur because organisms need them, mutations occur by chance, evolution is not directed toward a goal.
