Many clergymen took vows regarding celibacy and abstinence whenever they became priests. However, many of these clergymen were forced into the vocation by their families, therefore not feeling deeply connected with the religion and the people they were serving. They were only in their position because of the power their families possessed and the honor they thought having a priest, as a son would bring. For this reason, many people pushed back and criticized the corruption they saw happening in the church, since many clerical people in power were not effective at their job. The bubonic plague, also known as the black death spread across europe starting in: there is no exact date for when it ended, seeing as it continued to progress for hundreds of years and affect many populations. The plague would create swelling on people"s body and cause death. Though it would go away, the plague kept coming back every 20 years, until approximately the 1700s.
