5. Dialectic (for Hegel versus for Marx)
o Dialectic:
• The dielectic is a logic that proceeds by negation and
overcoming
§ Example: Bud -> flower -> fruit
§ The Flower can't exist at the same time as the bud, but it
also can't exist without the thing that came before
• The dialectic involves a thesis, anti-thesis and eventually a
synthesis
• None of these can be reduced to each other
• The end goal od the dialectic is self-consciousness
o Hegel:
• Hegel is an idealist
• He believes that the diaalectic is how we evolve collectively as
we encounter the world and how our beliefs are challenged and
how we overcome it.
• Hegel presupposes that we know who we are by the existence
of others.
