Substance versus Code (for David Schneider)
o We as Americans all share the same kinship system.
o Substance:
• this relates more towards nature, the sharing of blood and
genetics
• i.e. you share the same blood as your siblings, the blood is the
substance
o Code:
• This relates not on substance but through law,
• When you marry someone and have in-laws,
• the in-laws are an alliance through the marriage.

Feeding and Relatedness (for Janet Carsten)
o For the Malaysian society that Carston studies, kinship not is limited
to being related by substance or law.
o Kinship based not only upon biological (blood) relations but
ritualized social interactions such as eating together and living under
the same roof
o Thus through consuming the same food, and feeding and eating
together you become kin.
o Breastfeeding two babies, not biologically related is also an act by
which kinship bonds are formed
o Hence, it is deemed wrong if two people who were nursed by the
same woman, were to marry later in life
