58 views2 pages
History:
Lisbon’s family has 5 girls, from the age orders: Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary, and Therese. Mr.
Lisbon is a math teacher in the girls’ high school. When Cecilia tried her first attempt suicide, no
one in neighborhoods offer warm and cares. Instead, they gossiped behind and tried to
understand Cecilia’s action of suicide as a fun thing to discuss. Lux is the main character in the
file. After their youngest sister’s death, Mrs. Lisbon establishes the stick rules on girls’ activities.
They are forbidden to go out parties. After Lux’s absence from house at night at the only party
that Mrs. Lisbon allows the girls to go to, she locks the girls at house without going to school.
They have no social life at all. Lux is a 14 years girl. She’s experiencing one of the most
important changing process in her life: from a child to a young woman. She fell in love with a
boy Trip Fontaine. After she lost her virginity outside on a football field after a party, she is
abandoned by Trip. The lack of family communications and lack of education of puberty
between boys and girls lead to Lux’s suicide.
Symptoms:
The story is told by the neighborhood boys. Even though they are clueless, and they will never
actually understand Lisbon girls’ death, they are the “closest friends” that Lisbon girls ever had. I
think that in the film, Lux and her sisters are suffering from major depressive disorder. Even
though none of them has been specified diagnosed as it, it’s pretty clear with all the clues in the
film. The depression begins when she is abandoned by Trip Fontaine who took her virginity.
When she gets back home, she didn’t get any confront from her parents but a punishment that her
mom burns all the rock records she likes. No matter how hard she begs her mom, she burns
everything. Not only did Mrs. Lisbon burn all the music Lux likes, she also burns her hopes and
passions towards life. After that day, she loss of energy nearly every day. She lies on the floor
doing nothing. Of course, she doesn’t need any energy since she’s locked in her room every day.
She had depressed mood most of the day. She smokes and indulges herself to have sex with guys
on the roof randomly and frequently at night. Sex supposed to be based on love and pleasure. But
from Lux’s eyes and cigarettes after sex, there’s no interest or pleasure. She’s indifferent to her
body and no longer value herself.
