All religious systems come out of death and death like states (dreaming), people are made of two parts: soul and body. He believed ppl who agreed with this (intentional burial types) were wrong/ believed in science. Emphasis shift, he was concerned less about individuals and more about society. Rituals perform a social function, ppl need to feel integrated and society needs for union. Two of his students came up with a theoretical model- rites of passage. Shared ritual activities, follow a pattern they enable ppl to move from one social status to another: marriage, graduation, funerals. The society outlasts the individuals that comprise it, individuals come and go but the society continues, regeneration. Van gennep(student 1)-these rituals share three part structure. Separation: cut away from the herd, detachment, withdraw from current status and prepare to move to another (dead body before funeral) Re-incorporation:completed the ritual, new identity, re enters society with a new status, usually a big party.
