Violent actions can get what we want and forgiveness can be seen as weakness. Man"s natural condition is always universal war. Three components of universal war: competition (1), diffidence (2), and glory (2: competition = other person has something you want, diffidence = sense of distrust/suspicion, glory = fame, power, wealth. Humans always want something/want to gain something: individual is always before community, not naturally social, naturally antagonistic. Argues we are not inclined to good when behaving in natural way. Natural lust part of human law: basic reproduction becomes duty/ethical must guarantees family structure, deep down lust but need love as social contract to keep family together/united. Death is evil no one wants it and tries to shun it. The leviathan (1651: big monster made up of a bunch of little parts because no organizing authority. Devine right of kings king responsible/answerable to god: means king is in charge of everything (very strict but not supernatural)
