Document Summary

Virion - a complete viral particle, consisting of a nucleic acid, capsid, and envelope (sometimes). Species (eukaryotic definition) - groups of actually or potentially interbreeding populations. Complex - a polyhedral head and a helical tail. Polyhedral capsid - capsomeres organized into equilateral triangles, which are assembled into dome-shaped structures. Membrane fusion - viral envelope fuses with the host cell membrane and empties the rest of the virion into the cell. Receptor-mediated endocytosis - enveloped virus is phagocytized by the cell. Attachment - virus attaches to the host cell surface at the receptor site on the cellular membrane. Penetration - three different types depending on whether the virus is naked or enveloped. Biosynthesis - viral components are synthesized by the host cells. Assembly/maturation - viral components are assembled into new viruses. Release - hundreds of new viruses exit host cell via either lysis or budding. Lysis occurs in naked viruses and kills the cell.
