Chapters 15 and 16 of hopkins and sides both acknowledge the fact that there is a growing abundance of news outlets that voters have to choose from. Matthew levendusky argues that the growth in media outlets has led to an increase in polarization. Kevin arceneaux argues that partisan media emerged after congress had already begun to polarize. Levendusky believes that if people are less intrigued by political news outlets, they can opt in for more entertaining media outlets such as entertainment tonight. As people begin to do this, their information about politics decreases and they become less likely to participate. Therefore, this is moving in a less polarized direction. Arceneaux"s experiment found that mainstream news programs are equally as polarizing as partisan news programs. Polarization is not caused by the number of news outlets that we have access to, but rather there is an increase in the belief that media contributes to polarization.
