they do….wouldnt say ) love choc ice cream as an emotion
● 3 components:
o 1) cognitive-positive or negative evaluation that tends to be complex

● silver medalists compare themselves to gold
medalists...bronze medalists compare themselves to
everyone who didnt get a medal gold happiest, bronze
second happiest)
o 2) physiological-bodily arousal
▪ Amygdala part of the brain (plays important role in fear)
▪ Phys. section can process information independently from of
cognitive awareness (before brain has chance to catch up)
● Ex) Walking down dark alley and hear footsteps (body
could figure out before your mind what is happening)
o -SONA experiment..heart rate goes up when

Ex) Paraplegics hold pen in mouth either smiling or
frowning then shown comics (those who held smiled thought comic
was funnier)
Ex Botox paralyzes nerves so they cant move...unable
to do facial feedback
● happiness

o circumstances are only about 10% (can make yourself happier
through intentional activities)
o intentional activities=40%
▪ Good Predictors:
● 1-social relationships*** (single greatest determinant of
happiness)
● 2- work
● 3-Health
● 4- Religion (people who are religious are usually
happier)
● 5- Politics (republicans tend to be happier)
