Subjects are 38 known males with 5-alpha reductase deficiency (in the dominican republic); they are testosterone exposed and testosterone responsive boys born with female-appearing external genitalia and raised as girls. Interviews designed to discern any sexual ambiguity in rearing of subjects raised as girls. Four patterns evaluated in those who shifted to male gender identity/role: (1) sexual gender identity (2) sexual patterns (i. e. , aggressiveness, large motor activity & occupation) (3) sexual object of choice/erotic interest (4) sexual mechanisms (e. g, erection) Of 18 subjects, 17 successfully changed to male gender identity and 16 to male gender role. The change occurred either during puberty or in post-pubertal period. Although they behave as males, their genitalia saddens them and they feel incomplete .
