Document Summary

The difference between civil rights and civil liberties is that civil rights are the freedoms to engage in certain behaviors and civil liberties are the freedom from certain interference from the government. Some examples of civil liberties include the freedom to vote, petition, and the right to due process. The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments are known as the civil war amendments. The thirteenth amendment banned slavery throughout the united states. Amendment provided equal protection under the law, arguably the most important amendment. The fifteenth amendment gave black citizens and former slaves the right to vote. The purpose of these amendments being written into the constitution was to protect against white southerners" efforts to re-enslave liberated blacks by passing radically discriminatory laws. Certain states tried to get around these amendments by enacting the black codes and jim crow laws: describe the protections in the fourteenth amendment.
