Document Summary

In the chapters that lie ahead, i report the results of intensive observational research for a total of twelve families when their children were nine and ten years old. I argue that key elements of family life cohere to form a cultural logic of child rearing. In other words, the differences among families seem to cluster together in mean- ingful patterns. In this historical moment, middle-class parents tend to adopt a cultural logic of child rearing that stresses the concerted cultivation of children. The 12 families are part of a larger study of 88 children from the middle-class, working-class, and poor. Lar- eau, with the help of her white and black research assistants visited these 12 families. Lareau conducted interviews with parents and teachers of the children as well. Through her study, especially her naturalistic observations of the children in their daily life, lareau was able to support her thesis: description, lareau uses description strongly in her method of development.
