--So now, we had to decide who our character would be. Since we’re both females, we
decided to write in a feminine point of view, as it was something very easy for us to
gauge as women ourselves.
--However, in this narrative, we decided to portray many of the facets of college that we
talked about in class through this female character--sort of to show not only what
colleges offer, but more of what students also look for in college. This way, we could
also portray the reasons why
students even go to college in general, such as job
security, etc.
--Alot of the college narratives we’ve read in class focus on students who obviously
need aid, but not very
much of it. We consciously chose to portray a very, very
low-income student so that the importance of going to college and getting a degree
could be further emphasized, as well as the struggles just applying
to college could
entail, too.
--We also consciously did not specify which race our narrator was; we wanted to make
the narrator slightly ambiguous so that she could be related to by women (and students)
of all walks of life, or at least students who understand the college application struggle.
--All in all, the point of our story was not only to depict what students want in college, but
also why
they go to college, and the struggles some may face to get to that point. We
also wanted to emphasize just how important these decisions are to students; in the
narratives we’ve read before, the students are nervous to get in because everyone
just
is, but through our story we emphasize not just how important college is, but what it truly
means to the students applying, as well.
--Hialeah
is a very relatable tale of suffering, low-income struggles, and the emotional
burden that woman have to carry as they trek through college.
