Document Summary

Be able to define, apply, and provide examples of them. Representative sample- a probability sample that represents larger population, a must for accurate unbiased estimates/description of pop. the larger the sample, the more closely it represents the population. Probability samples- individual"s probability of inclusion is known: simple random sampling= random selection - every person has equal chance of being included. Clusters, not individuals (randomly select counties, then schools, then students) Error of estimation how much we expect the sample data to deviate from the population (+) Small is good: reducing it by increasing sample size (n), decreasing population size (small n) and decreasing variance. Probability sampling problems: nonresponses- reduced representativeness. Solutions: incentives, follow ups, assess differences in responders v non-responders: misgeneralization- generalizing sample results to a different population. Nonprobability samples individual probability of being included is not known. Can"t accurately determine sample"s representativeness: convenience sampling= readily accessible participants. This is ok when examining relations btn variables/testing hypotheses.
