Document Summary

Know all of the key vocabulary terms: free will, moral responsibility, cogito ergo sum, etc. Free will: human claim that we can reason and make decisions, ability to control our behavior. Determinism: every future event is caused by a past event and the laws of nature, straight-line path. The metaphysical theory that every effect has one cause. The past and the laws of nature bring about everything. Indeterminism given the past and the laws of nature there are multiple futures. Laplacean demon: if determinism is true the demon could predict the outcome of everything. If indeterminism is true he could give probabilities but not predict. Principle of alternate possibilities: a person is morally responsible for what he has done only if he could have done otherwise. Deep self view: free will means actions come from deep self. Fatalism: belief that things will happen no matter our wanting them to happen. Sensation what you see or what you perceive.
