Document Summary

Chapter 7 human memory: retention and retrieval. Power function of retention (forgetting) captures different characteristics of early and late stages. A power function consists of three quantities, power, scale, and constant. What do they gets smaller and smaller with delay represent: power: function of delay (effect of delay, scale: measure of retention, constant: where retention starts to decay. Decay & interference: sleep study has shown evidence for the interference hypothesis than the decay hypothesis of forgetting. Redundancy: when a concept is associated with multiple other concepts, these associations sometimes compete against each other for retrieval but sometimes they cooperate. The former process is interference, and the latter is redundancy: describe bradshaw & anderson (1982) experiment, single condition: participants learn one little-known fact about a famous person. Interference effect (more facts, worse recall) evident between single and irrelevant condition but between relevant and single, recall better when participant had to learn additional facts casually related to target after a week.
