The functions served by language, or how people draw on language functionally to meet personal and social needs. What are speech sounds and what are non-speech sounds. How these speech sounds work together as a system (phonology) How to break words into smaller parts ( morphology) How words combine to form phrases and sentences ( syntax) What words and sentences mean ( semantics) Phonetics: articulatory phonetics, acoustic phonetics, auditory phonetics. Spelling vs phonetic transcription: each symbol represents only 1 sound. If 2 sounds distinguish one word from another there should be 2 symbols.
