Tube in bladder via urethra: may be indwelling (stay, could also be straight catheter; one time only, no balloon, reasons: Incontinence: distended bladder, retention, before surgery, need accurate i/o, residual urine (urine left in the bladder, critically ill, culture/sensitivity, ureteral catheters, very small, gray, left and right catheter output is recorded separately. Intermittent- titrate, irrigate to keep the bladder from blood/clots: continuous- roller ball and count drops, nursing judgment based on output. If you need to have a bowel movement, any urine passed with the bowel movement should be collected.
