If your privilege protects you, then you have a social obligation to protect others
BIAS
Bias is essential to inclusion
oIt is your frequent opinion of someone
Not always bad
What we do with those opinions will determine if they are bad
3 Definitions of BIAS:
oA particular tendency, trend, inclination, feeling, or opinion, especially one that is
preconceived or unreasoned
oAn inclination or outlook to present or hold a partial perspective, often
accompanied by a refusal to consider the possible merits of alternative points of
oA tendency to believe that some people, ideas, etc., are better than others that
usually results in treating some people unfairly
Facts about BIAS:
oBias is ever-present, unavoidable and human.
oMuch of the time biases are not only unintentional, but also unconscious.
oUnconscious bias translates into behavior.
oBias affects performance.
oBias affects minority groups than majority groups because there are many more
majority group members in key decision-making positions.
oTheir decisions, and thus biases, becomes embedded in organizational culture.
oThe biases of organizational culture reflect the biases of the groups who created
or run the organization.
oBias is normal, but it isn’t always good for inclusion either
Ethics
Norms, values, beliefs, habits, and attitudes that we as a society impose on ourselves
Ethical Assumptions Include:
oWith power (privilege) comes responsibility.
oAll people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
oDiversity enriches our world.

oAbleism
oDiscrimination
oExclusion
Assumptions about Power and Privilege Include:
oPower and privilege enable people to define, and to include and exclude.
oSuch assumptions hide the everyday institutionalized oppressions that
systematically exclude so many from full, safe social participation.
