BIOL 1202 : Exam 3 Notes
Document Summary
Flowering plants: two main groups: monocots and dicots(eudicots) October 17th: in monocots, the single cotyledon often remains within the seed making it a possible vestigial structure. Ex. corn: in dicots, the seedlings have two cotyledons each. Organ systems of flowering plants: plant can be divided into the root-shoot system. The existence of root hairs multiplies the root"s surface area for absorbing water and nutrients: top of the plant is equal in size to the roots; this creates balance and provides support. Aboveground (aerial or prop) roots give extra support: food storage is a function of all roots, but some are highly modified. Ex. carrots: breathing roots conduct oxygen to waterlogged roots. Compare to a stroke, brain cells die because mitochondria are not able to produce atp. Compare to cardiac arrest, arteries are clogged blocking the flow of blood with oxygen and glucose, causing cells to die.
