Colonies were permitted to trade from anyone else other than their mother country: to legitimize colonial rule-wanted people to believe and buy into colonial rule by winning support of the local people. They did this by bribery (given grants of land, life-time careers, education, and other material advantages) They disrupted the fabric of other cultures, it was very hard to resist. Europeans demanded taxes to be paid in cash and not in kind. This ended trade and barter limiting what you could produce. This shifted local populations from a subsistence economy to a cash crop economy. Gone through a revolution in agriculture that increased agricultural productivity. More people were able to work in factories bc they no longer had to work on the farm: rise of the merchant class. It was britain"s resources that enabled them to lead the world.
