Reconstruction began when union armies moved south after the civil war. Lincoln"s initial strategy had been to strangle the south using the anaconda plan to shrink the confederacy smaller and smaller using blockades and military pressure from multiple sides. Almost all of them being males between the age of 16-39. 4% of the total male population of the united states was estimated to have been killed. The north suffered much heavier casualties than the south: 350,000 northern men. The confederacy was estimated to have lost 250,000 men: an equal number from both sides was more than likely maimed. Union armies do eventually begin to wear down the southern armies and navies. European observers and many other people thought that the. Confederacy would undoubtedly win its independence because everyone thought the south was too large and too devoted to its cause for the north to withstand it.
