The concept during the civil war was never fight for equality", instead it was a war against the expansion of slavery that turned in the favor of. The reconstruction era was the first step for. African americans towards equality, but with all changes, comes adjustment and for southern democrats, these changes were not favorable. The enacting of the 13th amendment after the civil war gave african americans the title of freedman, until after the ratification of the 14th amendment in 1968 where their label was upgraded to citizens. The ratification was not a smooth process though. Lincoln"s assassination in april 1865 made his southern democratic vice president, andrew johnson, his successor. Johnson was an open racist and granted amass of pardons to former confederates.
