Athletics was extracurricular activity: most teachers didn"t support it as much as today, said it took away resources from academics. 1852- first rowing competition between harvard and yale: railroad sponsored the event and transferred people to the event as a marketing strategy. Teams were considered campus clubs; not sponsored by university. Very much like soccer at first: 25 on each team, 1 point for each kick through the goal posts. Transformed to look more like rugby: ball could be carried, 2 points for carrying it to goal. Walter camp: 3 tries to move the ball 10 yards, 11 players on the team, created first all american team. All 11 on each team were at the line of scrimmage with one person in the back with the ball. Started to be called hampton blood bath because of violence. Started to see football dynasties- teams winning or being good year after year.
