Socrates claims to know nothing, therefore knowing himself. Euthyphro euthyphro (priest) is accusing his father of being impious/murder, for leaving a servant who killed a slave in a ditch that flooded and servant drowned. He begins to question euthyphro about piety, looking for an absolute/universal definition. Euthyphro gives definitions, 1-what i"m doing, 2-what is dear to the gods, 3-what is dear to all gods. However none of the definitions provided satisfy socrates as expected. Apology (399b. c. ) put on trial by: meletus, anytus, lycon (sophists wisdom/knowledge teacher) Responds with story of prophet telling him that there is no one wiser than socrates, claiming to dedicate the rest of his life to solving that riddle. Present accusations tells lies about gods & corrupts youth. Argument stages 1 one vs. many, 2 vicious circle of corruption, 3 reducto ad absurdum (reduction to absurdity).
