Internal clock: responds to light input from the retina 90% goes through thalamus but not all, regulates melatonin via pineal gland by sensing fading light (especially blue waves, can be disrupted during transcontinental flights or change in shifts. Why does caffeine keep us awake: muscles adenosine decreased neuron firing in brain sleepy, caffeine blocks adenosine increased neuron firing pituitary gland: emergency adrenaline. Other factors: serotonin, temperature, alcohol, sleeping pills (decreased rem) Even if you sleep a full night after drinking, you may not feel rested in the morning. Alcohol lights sleep and suppresses rem sleep. Disrupts the total time you are asleep; you may wake up frequently throughout the night and have problems falling back asleep as the alcohol works throughout your system.
