Document Summary

Exam #2: suicide, heterosexual deviance, gays and other victims of social stigma. Depression is a risk factor, but doesn"t mean it"s a cause, not factor. Older (white) people (men) are more likely to commit suicide. There are more suicides in spring and during the beginning of the week because more people are active and busy. Causing them not to pay attention to suicidal-prone people. In the us, suicide rate is nearly twice the size as homicidal rates. Why sociologist study suicide: psychiatric perspective assume there is something wrong with someone who commit suicides (mental illness). Sociologist assume nothing is nothing wrong with individual: psychologist cannot explain patterns. Studying suicide: study variations and is a positivist approach. Methods issues: calculated rates we will use should be thought of as estimated, not perfect measure, can"t capture every suicide, intent is difficult for coroners to determine case. Methods of constructionist approach: not all leave notes.
