The most defining moments of a play are not always the most expected or the most accepted. Sometimes they exist to bring to light the harshest realities of life, or the situation at that time. Lsu mainstage production a free man of color, there are several defining moments in which the audience is forced to see devastation, injustice, and even happiness. The moment that stuck me the most was the one in which the protagonist jacques cornet goes from being a free man of color to a slave bound by chains. The moment you heard the chains clasping, you also heard jacques heart breaking. By the end of a free man of color, you are both rooting for mr. jacques cornet and hoping he fails. It is when he is exiled and finally returns, having heard of the revolution taking place, that he is finally overthrown by the high ranking husbands.
