PSYC 101 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Depth Perception, Olfactory Receptor, Eardrum
Document Summary
Sensation is collecting information about our environment through the senses. Perception all happens in our brain and is when we interpret our stimulus. Transduction is the process of turning energy detected around us into nerve impulses. 3 types of transduction: photoreaction reaction of a chemical in a nerve cell. This is the basis of vision: mechanical reactions physical movement of attachments to some nerve cells or physical pressure against others, molecular reactions sense of taste and sense of smell. Hearing detects pressure waves in the air that we experience as sound. We are only capable of detecting electro magnetic energy. We can only detect 3 colors: green, blue, red. Trichromatic theory explains how we perceive millions of different colors through the combination of those 3 colors. Opponent process theory: analyzes sensory information in terms of 3 sets of opponent colors . Depth perception: the ability to perceive 3d space and accurately judge distance, binocular cues.
