Scientific theories: general explanation of natural phenomenon developed through research/evidence. Atomic theory, gravitation theory, cell theory are examples. Evolution: all organisms alive today descended from past species. Uniformitarianism- present is key to past; life is slow, uniform process. Lamarck- species acquire traits through use and disuse, pass them to offspring. Traveled on hms beagle in 1831: wrote his magnum opus. Fossil record showed species that no longer existed and variations of modern species. Biogeography- galapagos islands finches weren"t found anywhere else in world: variation, variation to be heritable, result in differential reproduction. States species on earth descended from ancestral species. Different from lamark in that natural selection isn"t random! Reproductive potential of organisms: thomas malthus"s book about human capacity to reproduce exponentially, population increases exponentially while resources do not, more produced than could survive. Artificial selection: analogous to natural selection, humans choosing traits favorable to us, since farmers/humans can try to choose favorable characteristics or organisms, so must nature, ex.
