Document Summary
Deviance: deviance: behavior that violates significant social norms and is disapproved by large number of people, stigma: mark of disgrace setting deviants apart from normal people, deviance is relative. Education could be the societally accepted means to the goal of success: conformists: accepts means and goals. This is a result of harsh sentencing policies. Many other nations focus on crime prevention and rehabilitation more than sentencing. Stratification: social inequality: unequal sharing of social rewards. People in power deem their positions more important: range of talent in every society. In more rigidly stratified societies, there is a chance that those with talent will not have their talents discovered. Sense of efficacy: sacrifices are borne by parents, who, themselves were privileged by the differential reward system. One"s class/group depends on one"s relationship to the means of production. Laws benefit those who have more: exploitation: bourgeoisie takes advantage of proletariat. Makes sure they never pay proletariat how much their work is worth.
