Marge piercy"s woman on the edge of time is an excellent example of a science fiction novel, which incorporates both utopian and dystopian characteristics. The science fiction genre, typically described as the literature of change, is a speculative node of thought that may be pictured as a unique interaction between a story and its readers. This is demonstrated throughout the novel as piercy utilizes the technique of confronting us with a present that is obviously flawed and damaging to the characters we meet. Due to this, connie gets introduced to the future world of mattapoisett where utopian characteristics are brought to light. The purpose of creating futures is to get people to imagine what they want and don"t want to happen going forward. It is not only the desire for something better, but also having hope that such a future exists.
