SOC 216 Study Guide - Final Guide: 6 Years, Slut, Association Football
Document Summary
Understand the difference between sex and gender. Male and female -basic (but others exist). Gender = culture attitudes, meanings, beliefs, and behaviors associated with being m or f, learned through the process of socialization gender is described as masculine and feminine. Intersexuals: having both male and female chromosomes; existing or occurring between the sexes complicate this understanding because they can be both or some of both, when society claims that there really is no in between. Compare and contrast the theoretical explanations for gender differences: biological determinism; differential socialization; interplanetary theory of gender; social constructionist; functionalism; cognitive development. Biological determinism: nature, we are hardwired from birth to be different. Our brain structures and brain chemistries differ, reproductive anatomies differ, hormones differ, musculature differs. Sex differences- anatomical, hormonal, chemical, and physical differences. However, women and men both use both sides of their brains. Male/female sexuality: females more picky with choice of mates because only have limited eggs/fertility period.
