Document Summary

The birds is a horror/drama directed by alfred hitchcock and was released in 1963. Hitchcock uses several cinematographic techniques and edits to effectively give the viewer information about the scenes without having to directly tell them what is going on. The scene i chose to analyze from the birds is the opening scene from where melanie enters the pet shop until mitch puts a hat over the birds (chapter 2: 2:18-6:18). The scene starts off with melanie entering a pet shop to purchase a bird for her aunt. While the scene only lasts 4 minutes, a countless number of cuts and edits are used throughout the scene to give the viewer information that would otherwise go unnoticed had it all been from the same angle. During the conversation between melanie and the store clerk, different shots are taken and edited together to allow the viewer to see the facial expression and reactions of every single character.
