Married couples with children make up the largest portion of households with kids. There are more female-headed single-parent families than single-parents with male-headed. The postmodern family has very diverse structures with variations of cohabitation, marriage, and child styles. Recognize the differences between the family decline and family change perspectives. Family decline perspective: claim that cultural change toward excessive individualism and self-indulgence has led to high divorce rates and could undermine responsible parenting. Family change perspective: view family from a historical standpoint. Recognize the three societal trends that impact families.
