PSYCH 4540 Study Guide - Bipolar Disorder, Dysthymia, Psych
Document Summary
Depression & its disorders (major depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder; ch 8 and classes 4-5 to 4-7: describe the separation-loss and learned helplessness theories of depression. I found that the separation-loss theory has to do with an unresponsive nature of their parents. Unavailable caregivers continually fail to meet child"s emotional needs, which leads to insecure attachment. The child then begins to see themselves as unworthy and unloved. This inconsistent behavior can also lead to difficulties in regulating emotions, which can be a risk factor for later depression. I also found that cognitive thinking relates to negative thinking and mood, which can lead to the hopelessness theory. This proposes that depression-prone individuals tend to make external events their fault. They feel that when something bad happens that they are to blame (internal attribution), and they think the reason they are to blame won"t change over time.
