Document Summary

Ex: microbes on our skin getting nutrition from us. Mosquito biting someone with malaria- malaria gets in mosquito. 3 groups: arachnids- 8 legs ticks and mites (ectoparasites) ticks are often vectors insects- 6 legs fleas, louse, flies, bugs act as vectors- especially mosquitos! crustaceans- 8 or more copepods. Fungal infections mycoses- disease caused by fungi yeasts are fungi. Helminthiasis = most spread parasitic infection (infection by worms)- 2 billion people have it = 1/3 population of earth. Metabolism- total number of chemical reactions happening in a cell. Enzymes- responsible for metabolism increase rate of metabolic reactions w/o being changed. Reduce amount of energy needed for metabolic reactions. Glycosis (breakdown of sugar into 2 pyruvic acid molecules) Ending point: 2 pyruvic acid molecules (get 2 atp) Products of catabolism used to make essential molecules. Generation time- time it takes to double population. Measuring turbidity is the most common method for estimating bacterial growth. Does not distinguish between living and dead cells.
