Although these children may face criticism from peers, this is not necessarily a bad thing because the child has not done anything wrong other than express himself or herself. In addition, parents should continue to exercise an authoritative parenting style in which they encourage their child to pursue autonomy. In pursuing autonomy, the parents are giving their child independence, which gives them the opportunity to be who they want to be.
