Document Summary

In the gospel of mark, jesus often tells those he heals and other witnesses not to tell others about what they saw after he performs his miracles. This is known as the messianic secret, and its purpose is two-fold. First, if everyone learned that jesus was performing miracles, everyone would rush to him, and jesus would be overcome by the crowds. Second, jesus knows that many jewish people have a preconceived idea of the messiah and think that he will be a great conqueror who will free israel from roman control. Jesus is the messiah, but not a great conqueror. By telling people not to proclaim him as the messiah, jesus is trying to prevent the spread of a false understanding about who he really is. Jesus refuses to give a sign that the people ask for because that would only show his power and give people the wrong impression about who he is.
