Obama-hop - hip-hop/rap based around obama in 2008. Online participatory democracy - brought more youths out to vote. Seemed more grass roots, bottom up rather than top down (rap the vote in earlier elections was p. diddy and russell simmons). Felt super corporate, but the obama-hop earnest and real coming from real americans. More black - grew up in a wealthy family, in hawaii, privileged. Made everyone else look bad (who was running against him) Political, radical, and gendered discourse of the obama-hop movement. People thought racism would disappear after he was elected, but it didnt. Idea of claiming obama as a black person. Created a sense of black community that had something to rally around. Not black/white but asian, indian, and more. Skin tone doesn"t matter but it does. People say skin tone is irrelevant but it"s embedded deep down.
