Christianity presents sin: not represented in classical world, but hamartia used to define sin in old testament. Now represents violation god"s law and represents evil in sinner. All sin is representation/expansion of original sin - adam and eve eating apple in. Augustine - pear theft repetition of original sin. Because of original sin individual can no longer achieve salvation on own merits. Salvation possible only because of jesus christ dying to save humanity (not a result of human action gift from god) Problem for christianity, if there is independent evil, god did not create all, or god did create evil and therefore is not all good. Moral evil/sin is choice of lesser good over greater good (all relative) Augustine"s motives may be pure but are haunted by impure motives: pear theft: object of sin is not particularly appealing itself (not about object) Faced with question, why did i do this?".
