messages
Seven components of the communication process
1. A source, presenter, or speaker who utters the message
2. A receiver, audience members, or classmates who listen
3. A message: your words and ideas adapted to that audience
4. A channel, or means of distributing your words
5. Feedback: responses from the audience (verbal and nonverbal)
6. A situation: the context in which the presentation occurs (time, place, occasion)
7. Noise: any form of interference with the message (internal or external)

2. Organizing
3. Style
4. Understanding
5. Delivery
Invention
the art of finding information
Organizing
the arrangement and structure of the presentation
Style
the use and ornamentation of language
Understanding

Delivery
the verbal and nonverbal technique used to present the message
Mode of Delivery
1. Extemporaneous Mode
2. Memorized Mode

Extemporaneous Mode and example
Presenter often delivers a presentation from a keyword outline. Ex. Listen to the teacher
asking a question and you jot down key words then you answer the question
Memorized Mode and example
One in which a presenter has committed a presentation to memory. Ex. Banquet speech
Manuscript Mode and example
when speaker writes out the complete presentation in advance and then uses the manuscript
to deliver the speech but without memorizing it. Ex. Politician who releases info to the press
Impromptu Mode and example
Giving a presentation without advance preparation. Ex. Teacher calling on you to answer a
question
Organizational Patterns of Informative Speeches
1. The Time-Sequence Pattern
2. The Spatial Pattern
3. The Topical Pattern
4. The Cause-Effect Pattern
Time-Sequence Pattern
describes the order of events or steps as they actually would or have occurred
(1943,1960,1963,LSD)
Spatial Pattern
demonstrates how items are related to space (famous sites and landmarks in Pittsburgh)
Topical Pattern
break down a large topic into smaller sub-topics (LSD)
Cause-Effect Pattern
describes why something occurs, usually tracing the effect back to the cause, or vise versa
(lung cancer)
Purpose Statement for an Informative Speech
should aim at informing the audience of your topic. It should include an observable goal for
what your audience to take away from the speech. (My audience will be able to explain the
history of the drug LSD)
Thesis Statement for an Informative Speech
is a more catchy and memorable version of the specific purpose statement. It should be one
complete and declarative sentence so your topic is clear. (LSD has had some major
influences on the world we see today)
