Document Summary

This experiment was performed in order to master basic lab techniques and identify an unknown microbe. Students were given an unidentified microbe, educated on the source, and assigned the task of carrying out physiological and biological tests to narrow down the potential options. The first step in determining the identity of an unknown microorganism was the gram- stain (demers, page 62), which could result in either a purple gram positive microbe or pink gram negative microbe. The gram-stain also showed the shape and arrangement of the unknown, which helped to narrow down the potential microbes. Following the gram-stain, several biochemical tests were carried out so that the student was able to identify a single microbe that corresponded to the results. Using the charts in appendix e, f, g, and h (demers, pages 297, 299, 301, 303), students were able to choose the appropriate match based on the outcome of each test.
