Document Summary

Transitional fossils support the theory of evolution by natural selection because they support a link between land to water, and common animals to their ancestors. Molds: imprints left from something that was buried; the substance decays and mold is left. Casts: sediment leaks into a mold and hardens to form an original copy of the structure: ex. Piece of rock with shell once embedded in it. Mineralization: minerals carried in water build up n the spaces of an organism: petrified wood/mineralized dinosaur bone. Impression: prints/marked made when an organism"s body has been compressed (leaves) Preserved as they are: without mineralization: ex. Piece of shell stuck in a rock, diatomaceous earth. 3 ways fossils are preserved without being buried: frozen in ice: preserved by being frozen very quickly, caught in amber: caught in the sap of a tree which hardens into amber, stuck in tar: mired in tar.
